QualificationsPh.D., University of Chicago, History of Art, 1982. M.A., University of Chicago, History of Art, 1975. B.A., University of Notre Dame, History of Art, 1973. Expertise and Research InterestsShort term: The enterprise of Giovanni Benedetto & Salvatore Castiglione:This topic grew out of the recent research I conducted in Italy in Genoa, Mantua, and Rome. I intend to situate the Castiglione brothers within the context of courtly society of gift and obligation and by doing so, offer a case study as to how artists ofthe 17th century received commissions, sold their works, and produced them within the limited economic means available to them.Long term: History of Connoisseurship:I am interested in plotting out the institutionalization of connoisseurship during the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Italy, and specifically in Genoa and in Rome. How was authenticity dealt with in the legal system in Italy during the early modern era? Who was appointed to make decisions regarding the authorship of works of art? Why was this of major importance?I'm also interested in the history of illegal exportation of works of art from Italy during the 17th and 18th century. Some questions I seek to answer: How was this achieved? Why? What motivated the exportation of such works? My foreign interests are: Italian state and private family archives. My Cross-Departmental interests are: critical theory; the history of biography; and reading I Promessi Sposi in Italian.
