Expertise and Research Interests

Clinical research efforts focus on novel approaches for treating intracranial aneurysms, intracranial vascular malformations, carotid artery disease, occlusive cerebrovascular disease, moyamoya disease and stroke. These include technical advances in microsurgery, interventional radiology, stereotactic radiosurgery, 3D imaging, surgical navigation, the use of mild brain hypothermia and other clinical neuroprotective agents, and neurotransplantation.

Dr. Steinberg's laboratory is interested in elucidating the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia and in developing neuroprotective strategies to improve outcome after stroke. Successful neuroprotective therapies have included use of glutamate antagonists, leukocyte antibodies, inhibitors of apoptosis and necrosis, mild brain hypothermia and gene transfer techniques.
