QualificationsM.D., Tulane University, Medicine, 1984. B.S., Wofford College, Biology, 1980. Expertise and Research InterestsI previously served as the Director of the Adult Critical Care Medicine Division, the Co-director of the Surgical Intensive Care Units, the Medical Director of the Adult Postanesthesia Care Units, Medical Director for respiratory Services and as the Medical Director of Critical Care Information Systems for The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. In 2004 I was promoted to Vice Chair for Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and to Associate Dean and Director for Continuing Medical Education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In addition, in January 2009 I completed a 2 year term as the Chair of the Critical Care Work Group which consists of representatives from the following 6 Societies: Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, American Association for Surgery and Trauma and National Association for the Medical Direction of Respiratory Care.
I have a long term interest in computer-assisted decision making, expert system integration, and integrated data displays. Principally, I am known for team building. These activities are only a small component of my areas of interest. Clinical research interests include the stress response to surgery, aminoglycoside antibiotics, fungal infections, and renal failure. I am specifically interested in applying pharmacokinetic models to drug administration in critically ill patients with the ultimate desire to electronically monitor drug administration and offer clinicians decision support information. My present largest project addresses the ethical issue of triage in the ICU and its implications for disaster preparedness.
My clinical responsibilities vary slightly from year to year, but typically include a mix of attending in the main ORs, Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Weinberg Surgical Intenisve Care Unit, Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) Post-AnesthesiaCare Unit (PACU) and the Preoperative Evaluation Center (PEC)
Administrative interests include CCM education, CCM billing, coding and documentation, the structure and process of care in intensive care units, and creating a culture of quality and safety.
Presently, a major focus is improving health through education. I believe the future will include integrated educational programs across health care providers and patients.
I hope to combine the above passions in some of my national roles as I was just elected as President of the American Society of critical Care Anesthesiologists. I am also the Vice President of the Society for Academic CME and am intimately involved in Conflict of interest issues national as I srve on the IOM cmte on Conflict of Interest in Education, research and Practice as well as co-chair the Hopkisn Committee on Conflict of Interst and serve on the Hopkins Conflict of Committment Committee. Other ExpertiseAcademic Experience: I am active in too many committees here at JHH to list. Nationally I am on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists and I am the Immeditae past Chair of the Anesthesiology Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. I serve as the Course Director for Perioperative Management, presently starting its 19th year. I Chair the Communications Committee and the Task Force on Billing, Coding and Documentation for the ASCCA, and I Chair the Communications Committee and the Public Policy for the Anestheisology Section of the SCCM. I have just been named the SCCM representative to RUC.
Business Experience: I serve as a consultant to VISICU, a company dedicated to providing Telemedical Servicesin Intensive Care Units and have consulted for many Practices and Universities on the structure and process of Intensive Care Medicine. I have just become a consultant to VHA, Inc for the Transformation of the ICU project. In addition, I participate as anexpert witness in about 5 cases per year, usually involving patients who have required hospitalization within an ICU. Future ResearchI plan on expanding research in quality and safety in the ICU.
