Expertise and Research Interests

I've worked on various aspects of cancer research, in studies involving a range of disciplines. Early work, prior to 1980, was in biophysics and cellular biology, with a particular emphasis on stem cells of the blood-forming system.

Since 1980, I've been involved in research related to cancer control, with an emphasis on the assessment of various factors able to influence decision-making in oncology. Initial work in this area was on the use of the methods of utility measurement to assess preferences for various health states. Subsequent work has been concerned mainly with quality of life assessment, health-related knowledge transfer and exchange, and aspects of research ethics related to these topics.

A major current interest is the role of the Internet in fostering the dissemination, exchange and discussion of health-related information. This could be regarded as research at the intersection between health informatics and population health ("Population eHealth"). There's no consensus yet about any single comprehensive definition of "eHealth," but one that I currently prefer is: '"eHealth, from a lay perspective, is about the online transfer and exchange of knowledge - to give people opportunities to know more about their health and health needs (if they wish to do so)."

There's been much discussion about the quality (or lack of quality) of information available via the Internet. My own view is that open access to the peer-reviewed research literature provides a crucial (and rapidly-evolving) route to overcoming existing barriers to the online dissemination of quality-reviewed information. The traditional subscription-based approaches to the publication of peer-reviewed research are highly inequitable, because much of this research is published in expensive journals that may not be easily accessible to the researchers, scholars, practitioners, policy makers, educators and students, innovators and advocates of innovation, entrepreneurs and members of the media and the public to whom the findings are often most relevant (and especially, in developing nations). Cost-effective alternatives are being sought.

On November 20, 2006, I started a blog on topics related to the Open Access Movement, entitled: "Be openly accessible or be obscure" (tillje.wordpress.com). On August 28, 2008, I also began editing another blog, entitled: "Cancer Stem Cell News" (cancerstemcellnews.blogspot.com), a blog of news items related to cancer stem cells, with an emphasis on recent research and articles that are openly accessible. On December 25, 2008, I joined Twitter (twitter.com/jimtill), and began to post brief updates about items of personal interest, including ones relevant to my two blogs.

Future Research

My current plans are to continue to explore, via two blogs (tillje.wordpress.com and cancerstemcellnews.blogspot.com) and a Twitter page (twitter.com/jimtill), ways to foster the development of the Open Access movement in general, and it's applications to the field of cancer stem cell research in particular.

Industrial Relevance

It's increasingly recognized that the traditional business model of commercial academic publishing, which once served the academy's information needs, is economically unsustainable from the perspective of university administrators and librarians.

See, for example, "Not so quiet on a Western front", by Daniel Greenstein (Associate Vice Provost, Scholarly Information, University of California; University Librarian, Systemwide Library Planning and California Digital Library), Nature, 28 May 2004 (www.nature.com/nature/focus/accessdebate/23.html).
