Expertise and Research Interests

My research interests include the archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnoarchaeology of the Spanish Colonial endeavor in the Americas. Future work will examine the nature of ethnogenesis in protohistoric Venda, South Africa. Primary to such research is the study of systems of cross-cultural contact and the way they operate in structuring and mitigating social and ethnic boundaries during the proto-historic and colonial periods. Related to these research foci are the relationships between colonization and the historical transformation of indigenous landscape, foodways, and identity. As an archaeologist, I am especially interested in the potential for examining these issues through the analysis of material culture and technology. However, my research projects are focused on multidimensional processes that are both archaeological and contemporary, necessitating collaboration with living communities in the narrative building process.

Other Expertise

- Reconstruction of anthropological processes through the use of zooarchaeological, ceramic, and geospatial data analyses
- Applying engineering structural and thermodynamic analyses to archaeological materials and processes, for example, in the study of mechanical models of lithic technology and material properties of chert in a Natufian assemblage from the Southern Levant

Future Research

- Developing teaching and learning materials for Mesa Vista Consolidated Schools. The project uses data from the historical archaeology of a frontier settlement of colonial New Mexico, exploring the nature of pluralistic community and how identity was expressed in foodways and the construction of cultural landscapes. This project is underway in collaboration with local community members and agencies in Rio Arriba County.
- La Chaire-a-Calvine (Mouthiers-sur-Boeme, Charente, France): 3D Scanning and modelling of parietal art dated to the Magdalenian Period (16000BP), the rockshelter, and the surrounding cliff - Pending bid to county government.
- Historical archaeology of iron smelting communities and royal terrace landscape creation associated with Venda expansion into Tshimbupfe, South Africa. This pilot study will be in cooperation with traditional local authorities of Hanani Village, Tshimbupfe Musanda, and a coalition from the Vuwani Educational District.
