QualificationsM.P.H., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Epidemiology, 1999. Ph.D., University of Kiel, Nutrition, 1998. M.S., University of Kiel, Nutrition, 1994. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research interest is in the genetic and molecular epidemiology of cancer with focus on nutrition. I am particularly interested in studying the impact of cancer risk of common genetic variations in nutritional pathways and interrelation with diet (gene-diet interactions) as well as genetic variants across the entire genome (genome-wide association studies). In addition to questionnaire data, I am increasingly applying molecular tools to assess dietary exposures and intermediate biomarkers.
Projects that I am currently working on include (but are not restricted to):
Genome-wide association studies for colon and breast cancer Selenium and genetic variations in selenoproteins Antioxidative vitamins and variation in vitamin E transporter genes Use of vitamin and mineral supplement Molecular markers of insulin resistance and variations in insulin resistance related genes Vitamin D, calcium and variations in genes of related pathways
On these projects, I am working together with investigators of different disciplines, and I am seeking to expand these interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance research on nutrition and cancer in population-based studies.
