East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine Physiology ProfessorAppointed: 1990 | |
QualificationsPost-doctoral fellow, Respiratory Division, 1986. Ph.D., West Virginia University, Physiology, 1984. Expertise and Research InterestsMechanisms underlying obstructive airways diseases. Past projects include characterization of respiratory burst activity by alveolar macrophages in the context of black lung disease, definition of electrogenic ion transport processes across nonciliated bronchiolar epithelial cells as related to impaired mucociliary clearance in cystic fibrosis, and investigation of epithelial modulation of smooth muscle activity in allergic asthma. Current projects focus on the regulation and physiological manifestations of allergen- and particulate-induced airway inflammation. Collaborations with industry have supported the development of a non-human primate model of asthma for elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the chronic disease and evaluation of novel putative therapeutic approaches. Other ExpertiseIon transport and epithelial biology; induction of allergic asthma in rodents, rabbits, and non-human primates; in vivo assessment of aerosolized therapeutics in laboratory animals. Industrial RelevanceThis laboratory collaborates extensively with industry in preclinical testing of emerging therapeutics for lung disease, particularly asthma. KeywordsCOS Keywords:Animal Physiology or Morphology, Asthma, Human Physiology.Additional Terms:Airway Inflammation, Asthma, Particulate Matter.MembershipsAmerican Physiological Society Previous Positions1986-1990, Research Assistant Professor,
