Expertise and Research InterestsMy teaching interests include analysis and modeling of environmental systems, physical-chemical processes in the environment and in treatment systems, environmental chemistry, and hazardous waste management. My research has focused on sorption phenomena and other environmental mass-transfer processes, pollutant-soil interactions, treatment systems based on adsorption processes, and the environmental behavior of hazardous substances, and exposure assessment. In addition to reasearch, I am currently serving as Associate Director of the Midwest Hazardous Substance Research Center, a research consortium involving Purdue University, Michigan State, Kansas State and Virginia Tech; Director of the international project Training and Research in Environmental Health -- the Balkans; and Director of Technical Outreach Services to Communities program at MSU. Other ExpertiseI maintain a strong secondary interest in environmental analytical chemistry. I teach a gradate courese on environmetal sampling, analysis, and data interpretation, where the focus is on understanding the relationships between measurement techniques andthe interpretations that can be made from them. I have also developed several new methods including a headspace GC technique for VOCs in soils, and an on-site arsenic speciation method. Industrial RelevanceI have done consulting on contaminated site remediation, industrial waste minimization and management, environmental sampling and analysis, and waste management in metal finishing/electroplating facilities. I am particularly interested in working in a training capacity with industrial facilities to balance environmental compliance objectives with production and quality goals.
