QualificationsPh.D., Graduate Center, The City University of New York, Speech and Hearing Sciences, 2004. Expertise and Research InterestsThe main focus of my research is on the perception of meaningful environmental sounds by normal and hearing impaired listeners and users of auditory prosthesis such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. I am interested in the following questions. What information about the objects and events in the environment do listeners perceive from common environmental sounds? What is the relationship between perception of speech and environmental sounds? What acoustic parameters and cognitive factors play a role in the perception of environmental sounds? What can be done to enhance listeners' awareness of objects and events in their environment through sound? Other ExpertiseMy other research interests include issues in cross-language speech perception and production and their role in audiologic assessment, auditory attention in normal and hearing disordered populations, auditory training, and evaluation and development of expert listening skills. Future ResearchCurrent and future research plans include: 1. Development of training methods designed to increase auditory based environmental awareness of cochlear implant and hearing aid users 2. Development of environmental sound perception evaluation techniques 3. Investigating the relationships between environmental sound and speech perception by hearing impaired listeners 4. Assessment of the contextual cues to environmental sound perception 5. Development of improved signal processing strategies for environmental sound perception through cochlear implants.
