M.B., University of Minnesota, Medicine, 1947. B.S., University of Minnesota, Medical Science, 1946. B.A., University of Minnesota, Liberal Arts, 1945. Expertise and Research InterestsMy major clinical and research interests at present are in the field of care for children with chronic illness. These interests involve methods of care delivery, medical support services, relations to general and special education, and ethical issues. With 40 years of experience and board certification in pediatric nephrology, renal disease in children has been the primary field of clinical expertise throughout my career. Childhood nutrition, with particular emphasis on obesity, has been as area in which I have done research and published numerous articles and book chapters in the past 3 decades. My initial research studies were involved with body composition and its nutritional determinants. Related to the work in nutrition has been a career-long involvement with problems of fluid and electrolyte balance. I wrote one of the first texts on such problems in children in 1969. As an outgrowth of work in fluid metabolism, I have been heavily invested in the care of children with diabetes mellitus from my fellowship training in 1951. For the past 24 years, I have written or co-authored the chapter on this field in the last 6 editions of Rudolph's Pediatrics. Serving as the first chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Bioethics, (1980-1986) has led to an intense involvement in ethical issues related to children. This resulted in the book, Ethical Issues at the Outset of Life, coedited with Martin Benjamin, Professor of Philosophy, numerous other articles and a monograph of Ethical Issues in Pediatrics (1989). Other ExpertiseAcademic Experience: I have testified before the United States Congress on issues in Child Health Care in the early 1970's; have prepared reports for the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) on Primary Care Training in the Indian Health Service and for the Robert WoodJohnson Foundation on the Health Care of Mothers and Infants among the Native People of Alaska. In 1980 I served as consultant to the State of Michigan on the effects of polybrominated biphenyl poisoning on the development of children and from 1988-1993 I served on the National Academy of Sciences Task Force on Pesticides in Children's Diets. For the past twelve years I have served on the Ingham Intermediate School District Diagnostic Team and from 1998-2001 was a member of the State Interagency Coordinating Council for early intervention and 1998-1999 the Advisory board for the Department of Community Health Managed Care for Children with Special Health Care Needs. In 1999 I was appointed to the Michigan Environmental Science Board's Children's Standards Investigational Panel. Most recently, I have been on the Pesticide Advisory Board of the Michigan Department of Agriculture. I am currently associated with the Michigan Network of Children's Environmental Health.I also serve as a Medical Expert for the Social Security Administration in the area of Children's SSI.
