Qualifications

M.D., Duke University, 1982.
A.B. (magna cum laude), Harvard University, Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1977.

Expertise and Research Interests

Trained and practice in cardiac rehabilitiation, exercise physiology and preventive cardiology.

Research interests include basic mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle responses to normal physiology stimuli, such as in exercise training, and abnormal responses to pathophysiology stimuli, such as occur in congestive heart failure, in chonic spaceflight and in aging.

Research program is integrative in nature and involves cell culture work, animal models and human clinical trials.

Another program has aim of identifying genetics markers and causative genes for early onset cardiovascular disease and other cardiovascular conditions, such as insulin resistance syndrome.

Other Expertise

Administration of cardiac rehabilitation programs, fitness centers and preventive cardiology programs that focus on lifestyle management strategies.

Industrial Relevance

Biotechology and tissue engineering.
Genetics of cardiovascular disease.
Skeletal muscle biology.
