QualificationsPh.D., Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Epidemiology, 1992. M.Sc., Harvard University, Health Policy and Management, 1984. B.S., University of California, Berkeley, Nutrition and Food Science, 1980. Expertise and Research InterestsAs an epidemiologist in the Department of Ophthalmology, I am interested in the distribution and characteristics of eye disease, in particular glaucoma, in human populations. I am currently involved in the following projects: (1) investigating new methods for detecting and measuring glaucomatous optic neuropathy and monitoring its progression; (2) studying the relationship between structural changes in the optic nerve and alteration of visual function; and (3) identification of characteristics of persons at an increased risk of developing glaucoma.
More specifically, I am the principal investigator of a National Eye Institute study evaluating the ability of new diagnostic imaging instruments to detect glaucomatous damage to the optic nerve and to monitor its progression. The ability to detect early signs of glaucoma and its progression at the site of damage, the optic nerve, may help ophthalmologists better understand the disease and initiate treatment at the most appropriate time.
Through the Imaging Data Evaluation and Analysis (IDEA) Center, I have developed procedures for utilization of these diagnostic imaging instruments in international mutli-center clinical trials of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. We hope that collaboration between research centers will help answer some of the difficult questions in glaucoma research. Other ExpertiseDr. Zangwill is recognized for her work in evaluating new imaging techniques including confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, scanning laser polarimetry and optical coherence tomography, for the diagnosis of glaucoma and monitoring its progression.
Dr. Zangwill accepts applications for post-doctoral fellows intersted in clinical research in glaucoma.
